William Plasencia

Principal Communications Consultant

William Plasencia is the Principal Communications Consultant for WorksCounsel. Will is a seasoned strategist with more than 25 years of experience who helps organizations build trust, navigate crises, and communicate with clarity when it matters most.

Will's career bridges journalism, publishing, government, and institutional communications in ways few practitioners can match. He began as a financial journalist, reporting for American Banker – the nation's leading daily financial services publication – and LatinFinance, covering high finance across Latin America. He went on to lead editorial teams at Latin Trade, CEO Publishing Group, and Latin CEO Magazine, managing teams of up to 20 across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe.

As Vice President at Bankrate, Inc., Will led the company's transformation from a niche print newsletter publisher to Bankrate.com, one of the nation's leading online financial information platforms, and launched the Spanish-language Consejero.com – later sold for a profit.

Will spent more than a decade in public service with the City of Miami, rising to Director and overseeing public outreach to more than 250,000 residents. He managed communications for a twice-elected City Commission Chairman, led advocacy and lobbying efforts at the state and federal levels, and secured more than $2.5 million in matching funds for historic district restoration. His political consulting contributed to successful re-election campaigns and the passage of legislation driving waterfront revitalization and community investment.

Most recently, Will served as Media Relations and Crisis Communications Lead at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy institution. There, he managed national media relationships, overhauled the Lab's Emergency Communications Plan, launched a crisis communications speaker series, and edited the Lab's employee newsletter reaching thousands of staff.

Will holds Advanced Public Information Officer, National Response Framework, and National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications from FEMA, and is a certified mediator through the University of California, Davis. He is fluent in English and Spanish, with conversational Portuguese.
